Playa del Carmen use to be a small fishing village that has followed the footsteps of Cancún and it is now a boom town.. Its cosmopolitan atmosphere has made it a favorite with Mexican and foreign tourists alike.

 Today it is the second most important destination on the coast. Called Playa by initiates, the town is a lively community. The beaches are perfect, if slightly more populated than they were five years ago, there are reefs offshore and jungle nearby, and the ambience is unmistakably bohemian.

Quinta Avenida (fifth avenue) is the center of town and closed to all but foot traffic in full length. A colorful enclave of restaurants, cafes, dive shops, one-of-a-kind boutiques, craft shops, smallish hotels and European-style B&Bs, La Quinta and its many cross streets is the grid of Playa’s social and business life, the heart of its nightlife.
